After years of debate, the use of a shot clock in high school basketball was greenlit at the June meeting of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s June Board of Control meeting.
The measure will allow teams to employ the use of the shot clock staring this coming season in non-conference meetings only and if the two schools agree beforehand.
A shot clock of 35 seconds will be optional for teams across Wisconsin this coming season in non-conference contests. Both teams have to agree on the use of the shot clock prior to the game. Discussion for full implementation of a shot clock, which wouldn’t come until the 2028-29 season, would need approval by the WIAA membership - the participating schools - at next April’s annual meeting.
Representatives from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association presented a proposal to expand the state basketball tournaments later in the meeting.
GIRLS WRESTLING
The WIAA adopted a plan for this year’s inaugural girls wrestling team state tournament.
According to the press release by the WIAA, there will be 64 girls wrestling teams to participate in this year’s postseason. The top two scoring teams from each individual regional competition will advance to various sectional competitions across the state with eight total teams finishing at the state meet in La Crosse alongside the boys team tournament.
The BoC also added measures to ensures to postseason individual seeding at the sectional round to ensure girls from the same two regionals aren’t facing off in every sectional semifinal.
HOCKEY
A change to the overtime procedures will go into effect next season. Teams will play a five minute five-on-five, sudden victory period, then a 17 minute period if they remain knotted. After that, there could be a five minute, four-on-four, sudden victory period to determine a winner.
The state hockey tournament will change venues this winter. The new location will be the LEGACY20 arena at DeForest Yards in DeForest.
The previous location, LEGACY20 Arena (formerly Capitol Ice Arena) in Middleton was used for both the boys and girls state hockey tournament from 2023-26.
