It rained.
Saturday's early-morning storm made for a very soggy start for Cashton's debut of its all-new cross country course behind the elementary school building.
The precipitation started overnight and continued into the morning. The dozen or so teams in attendance for the race went through their pre-race prep as the rain increased and then ran their races as it continued. By the time the boys race finished, however, the rain had stopped.
"With this being our home meet, the majority of my athletes were nervous and put a lot more pressure on themselves because they wanted to do well," said second year head coach Jim Herricks, "but I reassured them that they had run the course several times and that the rain was not to scare them and that they would all run well."
Richland Center captured both the boys and girls team titles and boasted individual winners in both races.
The Hornet teams each scored 36 points, holding off Viroqua's boys and girls. Pearl Fretz (20:48.2) claimed the girls' title while Owen Drier (16:33.1) the boys'.
Cashton's Audrina Schwarz was 11th overall (23:10.2) while June Jacobson (23:40) was 12th. Makalya Herricks (21st), Lynae McGinnis (40th) and Elise Weber (50th) rounded out the scoring runners.
The Eagles girls were fourth with 116 total points.
Herricks said, "The high school girls are a young group, but have been racing together for several years now so they are able to encourage and push each other."
For the boys, Klay Pedretti led the boys with a 31st place finish in a time of 21:07.3. Kevin Cuenca Romero was 53rd, Kolton Johnson 85th and Kaya Yeloglu 93rd.
