Michael James Barnes, 24, of La Crosse, WI, formerly of Cashton, WI, died unexpectedly Friday, July 3, 2026. Michael was born November 27, 2001, to James Barnes and Inga Olson Koehler. After graduation from Cashton High School in 2020, he went on to Viterbo to receive a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a valued employee of Trane Co. in La Crosse.
Michael was an excellent student throughout high school and college and excelled in everything he pursued. In high school, he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and track. He continued his passion for track while attending Viterbo University. He was also an accomplished trumpet player who earned several awards for his musical talent. Michael loved golf, pickleball, and just anything sports-related, and he enjoyed both playing and following sports- especially the Green Bay Packers, throughout his life. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cashton.
Above all, he will be remembered as a kind and thoughtful man. His quiet generosity and caring nature touched the lives of his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.
Michael is survived by his mom Inga (Angela) Koehler of Florida; sister Haley (Turner Wedge) of Kentucky; and his grandmother Janna Olson of Cashton; Inga’s sister Kayla (Greg Torry) Nelson, and cousins Xander and Zoey Nelson.
Michael was preceded in death by his father James Barnes; and grandfather Michael Olson.
A remembrance service with prayer was held at Torkelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 8. A celebration of life took place at Badger Crossing afterwards.
