The first of the three smelt fries scheduled to take place this year was a big hit this past Friday.

The smelt and wing fries at the VFW have been a fundraising tradition going all the way back to 1969. Back then; the newly formed members of the VFW caught smelt straight from the source and cleaned the fish using guitar picks. The Auxiliary joined in on the fun when they formed in 1970. A lot has changed since then, but the tradition holds firm.
