M-sgt. Alfred Kirking, stationed in Florida, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kirking, was one of 2,100 ground, air and airborne personnel who watched an atomic bomb explosion. In a letter to Cashton he wrote, “The blast I witnessed took place April 22 and supposedly was the largest ever detonated within the continental limits. It was a sight I will long remember.”
