Marilyn Yvonne Scharping, 87, of Westby, WI, passed away Friday, January 28, 2022, at Vernon Manor in Viroqua, WI. She was born November 19, 1934, to Julia Oium in La Crosse, WI.

Marilyn grew up in Timber Coulee attended Oium Grade School and graduated from Westby High School in 1953. She attended Vernon County Teacher's School and then UW La Crosse where she received her teaching degree. Marilyn was a substitute teacher for Westby, Chaseburg and Coon Valley school districts for many years.

Marilyn married Verdel Scharping May 24, 1957, at Skogdalen Lutheran Church. They loved and looked forward to going to dances on Saturday nights; and had the most fun going to family birthday parties and gatherings with the kids. Marilyn also worked at Sloan Brothers Butter Plant for a short time and at Walmart in the fabric department.

She was a member of the Sons of Norway and very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Marilyn and her daughter Vicki went on a trip of a lifetime together and toured Norway. This was her dream vacation.

Marilyn and Verdel had a special bond with their grandchildren. They lived for the annual camping trip to Jellystone Campground in Warrens with their 10 grandchildren and two dogs. It was a kid's only trip - no parents allowed. This was an event that everyone looked forward to for many years.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Vicki (Tom) Brueggen of Westby, Kala (Leonard) Rudi of Cashton, and Steve Scharping of Westby, and Diana (Kevin "Buck") Leis of Cashton, WI; 10 grandchildren: Trisha (Jesse) Mlsna, Nicole (Aaron) Wang, Stephanie (Brandon) Elliott, Jacob (Theresa) Brueggen, Tracy Rudi, Samantha Brueggen, Julia Brueggen, Bryan (Jessica Raspiller) Rudi, Mark Leis and Emma Leis; 12 great-grandchildren: Mason, Landon, Cameron, and Easton Mlsna, Addison, Alexandra, Ayla, Abram, and Aaden Wang, Huxley and Oaklynn Elliott, and Nova Brueggen; brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her mom, Julia Oium; husband Verdel Scharping in 2010; brothers and sisters-in-law; along with other relatives and many dear friends.

Funeral Services were held Friday, February 4, 2022, 1:30 p.m. at the Skogdalen Lutheran Church in rural Westby, WI. Pastor John Dumke officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The Torkelson Funeral Home of Cashton, WI, assisted the family with arrangements. Online condolences were offered at
