Boys hockey picks up first win in flurry of games

February 16, 2022

The Viroqua / Cashton / Westby co-op boy’s hockey team wrapped up their regular season schedule with a flurry of four games in six days last week and managed to pick up their first win during the busy stretch.

The Blackhawks opened the week with an 8-0 loss to the Black River Falls Tigers on Monday February 7. The Tigers scored three times in the first period and never looked back outshooting the Blackhawks 45 to 15 in route to their 15th win of the season.

Alex Hoyum was a busy man in goal for the Hawks recording 36 saves against 45 shots, while Tiger goalie Christopher Muir turned aside all 15 shots by the visitors. Drew Apicella scored a hat-trick with a goal in each period, Karsten Hunter added a pair of goals for the Tigers and Wyatt Madvig and Cooper Peterson each registered a three-assist playmaker in the contest.

On Tuesday evening the Hawks stayed on the road, making the long trek to Stoughton for a rematch with the Vikings hoping to improve on an early season 1-1 tie coming on home ice back on Dec. 4th.

After the 8-0 loss at the hands of the Tigers 24 hours earlier, the Blackhawks would show their true character, rebounding with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Vikings. Hoyum, a young VHS freshman, responded from the shellacking by BRF and turned in the best performance of his short varsity career recording 29 saves against 30 shots to earn the win in goal.

Landen Starr put the visitors in the lead with a goal early in the first period, with assists from Colin Simonson and Brody Steele. Dalton Buros would make it 2-0 midway through the opening frame off an assist from Brayden Dahl.

The Vikings cut the Viroqua lead, to 2-1, with a goal late in the second period, but Hoyum and the Blackhawk defense would pitch a shut-out the rest of the way to ensure the much-needed victory.

For the third time in their last 4 games the Blackhawks outshot their opponent, this time by a 35 to 30 margin.

It was back to the Viroqua Community Arena on Friday as the Blackhawks welcomed the Milton Red-Hawks for a non-conference game. The final was once again 2-1, but this time the Hawks found themselves on the wrong end of the score.

The RedHawks playing out of the Badger Conference built a 2-0 lead early in the second period, before Viroqua HS freshman forward Hudson Nundahl would score his first career varsity goal, as he sent the puck five-hole across the Milton goal, coming off assists from Corbett Bramstedt and Grayson Hertel.

That was as close as the Blackhawks could get however, as Redhawk goalie Alex Jones would shutout the Blackhawks the rest of the way.

Cooper Miller would take the loss in net for the Blackhawks despite stopping 26 of 28 shots by the visitors while Jones recorded 19 saves for Milton.

Less than 24 hours later the Blackhawks were back on home ice for a noon-faceoff versus the Chequamegan / Philips / Butternut co-op. The visitors scored single goals in each of the first and second periods to grab a 2-0 lead. Starr would cut the deficit to 2-1, with a double assist score, with assists from Simonson and Brody Steele early in the third period, but that was as close as the Hawks could get.

Miller recorded 26 saves against 28 shots, while Marcus Vittone stopped 24 of 25 shots by the Blackhawks.
