Ladies defuse Rockets, fall to Knights

The Cashton Girls Basketball team hosted New Lisbon last Friday, Jan. 7 for a Scenic Bluffs matchup without the team's leading scorer, Braylee Hyatt. Paige Olson and Teagan Hundt stepped up their games to score 14 points. The Eagles outplayed the Rockets in the first half and led 26-17 at the break and went on to win 50-39.

Grace Leis opened the first half scoring with a pair of free throws, then Sydney Helgerson drove for a bucket to answer a Rocket score, and Hundt scored on back-to-back plays in the paint to give Cashton an 8-3 advantage.

Olson scored two in a row, including a jumper off an assist from Ella Brueggen to extend the lead to 13-4.

Helgerson connected on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws that kept the Eagles in front 18-11 with 9:09 left in the half.

Emma Leis cashed in on a pair of free throws and Olson drained up a 12-footer to stretch the lead to 9, 22-13.

Amber Hoeft hit a 10-footer, and Hundt scored inside off a feed from Leis to keep the lead at 9 heading into the break.

Helgerson drove to the hoop to start the second half with a make and foul. Helgerson misfired on the free throw, but Hundt managed to come up with the rebound to score and give the Eagles a 30-17 lead.

Brueggen cashed in on a three-pointer to give the Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 33-17. Olson answered a pair of Rocket free throws with two of her own and Hundt scored the Eagles next 6 points, two coming off a nicely placed lob pass from Amber Hoeft and two more after an assist from Grace Leis.

Helgerson hooked up with Olson who scored off a fast break, and then Olson scored again in the paint off a feed from Grace Leis.

Quinn Cook and Amber Hoeft wrapped up the scoring for Cashton, each hitting one of two free throws to top the score off at 50.

Cashton 44 – Onalaska Luther 60

The lady Eagles Basketball team suffered a 60-44 road loss to Onalaska Luther Jan. 3.

After trailing by 8, 23-31, at intermission, the Lady Knights outscored the Eagles by 8 points again in the second half.

Braylee Hyatt was the game's leading scoring with 24 points, including 13 in the first half.

Paige Olson scored 7 points for the Eagles, and Teagan Hundt added 6.

Sydney Helgerson finished with 4 points, and Amber Hoeft 3.
