The Cashton Eagles Boys team kept an undefeated record intact in a rare non-conference meeting, upending the Sparta Spartans, January 8, 55-48.

It was an exciting contest from the start, with Cashton having to overcome a 27-32 half time deficit.

Trailing by five to start the second half, Bowdy Dempsey scored in the paint off a pass from Aiden Cook to open the scoring. Sparta answered with a short run to up by eight, before Alec Wall answered with a three-pointer for the Eagles.

With 10:57 still to play, Dempsey scored off a Presley Brueggen assist. Then Cook and Dempsey each connected on a pair of free throw attempts to knot the score at 40 apiece with 10:19 to play.

Brueggen hit on one of two free throws to put the Eagles on top, and Jack Hilden and Brueggen each nailed threes to extend the lead to seven points. It was a deficit the Spartans would struggle overcome. Sparta did tie the game at 57-57 with 3:14 left, but the Eagles never trailed again and outscored the Spartans 8-3 in the closing minutes for the win.

Cashton took the early lead in the first half and led 6-2 after Jarret Carpenter pulled up for a six-foot jumper. Sparta took the lead with 11:51 left in the half and stretched it to 12 points at the 6:25 mark. James Harter stopped the 13-0 Spartan run with an offensive rebound and score. The Eagles would outscore the Spartans 15-6 in the final 5:32 of the first half.

Dempsey hit a baseline jumper and then found Harter open in the lane for a score to pull the Eagles to within five points. Dempsey would score again inside, and Wall connected on a 10-footer to cut Sparta's lead to a single point. Sparta would stretch its lead back to seven points before Dempsey scored and hit two free throws to cut it to three. The Spartans got the final bucket of the first half to lead by five points.

The win improves the Eagles record to 9-0, 3-0 in the Scenic Bluffs Conference. Cashton continues to play aggressive team defense that had been keeping them in close games down the stretch.

SCORING: Dempsey 27, Hilden 16, Brueggen 8, Wall 5, Bayer 4, Carpenter 3, Cook 2. FTs: 24-34.
