Seventy-nine years have passed since the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan. Tuberculosis was running rampant in the United States, and it was estimated that close to 800 people in Wisconsin would be dead from the disease by year’s end. Minnesota’s running back Bruce Smith had been awarded the Heisman Trophy, and Russia had been involved in major fighting against Hitler’s Germany for at least two years.
