The ground was covered with a heavy blanket of leaves. Not crunchy, though, the ground beneath them was still soft and damp from the winter snow that had melted recently.

With each step acorns rolled beneath our feet. It was impossible to walk without stepping on them. The nuts most certainly were all without the brown hard caps they were born with. It was easy to pick them up by the handful, and upon closer inspection it was evident the winter had taken a toll on them. The thin outer...
