Mark "Sport" Arnold Schmitz

March 18, 2020

Mark “Sport” Arnold Schmitz, 55, of rural Cashton, WI, passed away Monday, March 9, 2020. He was born February 1, 1965, to Paul and Marllyn (VonRuden) Schmitz in Viroqua, WI.

Following high school Mark began working for the township of Portland. Soon he moved up to the Monroe County Highway Department where he spent the last 32 years. He was a great heavy equipment operator and was skilled with the ability to run any piece of machinery.

Becoming a dad changed Mark in a way he never thought it would. His little girl Aubree was the light of his world. He enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers with her and attending games together. Mark was thrilled that his little girl was tough as nails and that she loved being in the woods with him. Mark was one of her biggest fans and was very excited about her future.

Mark had a mischievous grin on his face wherever he went. It usually meant he was up to shenanigans of some sort, but mostly it was because he was genuinely happy to see you. Mark had a big heart and would gladly help anyone who needed it.

When he wasn’t at work he loved to be in the woods; hunting and fishing were a few of his favorite pastimes. Mark was an expert on all of the backroads in Monroe County. He was always looking for the best buck hunting areas. Mark was a great card player, some would say he bid too often, but talking smart with family and good friends was sort of Sport’s calling.

Mark is survived by his daughter, Aubree Schmitz; his mother, Marllyn Schmitz; sisters and brother, Elaine (Ernie) Hansen of Sparta, Doris (Bob) Anderson of Sparta, Vince (Nancy) Schmitz of Cashton; Aubree’s mom, Kristin (Todd Nofsinger) Schmitz; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Schmitz.
