In 1942, Evelyn enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corp which became the Women’s Army Corp while she was serving. As there were no Basic Training facilities for women at the time, Evelyn did her basic training at Daytona Beach, FL. She received further training at San Antonio, Texas. She then served the remainder of her years at Scot Field, Illinois where she was a clerk and messenger in the Judge Advocates Office. A special scooter was built for her to drive about the base delivering messages. Other highlights included attending the World Series games held in St. Louis during the war years and having her photograph taken with Clark Gable. Evelyn remained lifelong pen pals with the friends she made from all over the country during her time in service. Toward the end of the war Evelyn married Helmer Schye of Westby. The farmed in the Westby area during the early years of their marriage and then later moved to Cashton where Evelyn was a cook at Cashton High School for twenty years.
Evelyn was a very active member and past officer of Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity WELCA and Quilters, the Cashton VFW Auxiliary, the Cashton American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary. In 1986, she received the Cashton American Legion “Legionnaire of the Year Award” and in 2013 she received the “Jeanette Frank Continuous Service Award” from the state VFW Auxiliary.
Evelyn was a caregiver for her husband for the last years of his life and while staying at home she made hundreds of quilt tops to be sent to Africa and countless ditty bags and lap robes for the VA Hospital. She also mended the flags that flew over the village for years. Late in life, feeding and watching the birds and squirrels became her joy.
