Boys wind up on short end of battle against Westby Norse

The Eagles hosted the Westby Norse on Monday in non-conference action. After leading by one point at halftime, Cashton fell by two, 72-74.

Jarret Carpenter drove for a score and Bowdy Dempsey hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles an early lead, 7-3. Westby reclaimed the lead before Trevin Freit hit from long range to bring the advantage back to the Eagles.

With 5:56 left in the fist half Westby had pulled ahead by seven points, but Cashton would go on an 8-0 run to take back the lead.

Isaac Hemmersbach sank a seven-foot jumper, then Hilden drained back to back three-pointers give the Eagles a 29-28 edge.

The Norse would again go on the attack and take back the lead.

With 2:13 left in the half, and trailing by four, Cashton made one more push before time expired.

Dempsey drove to cut the margin to two, and Hilden cashed in at the buzzer from behind the three-point arc to give the Eagles a one point lead, 37-36.

Cashton extended the lead to kick off the second half.

Hilden hit another three point shot, and Carpenter drove for a score to increase the lead to six points.

Westby made a run to take back the lead, and with 14:28 left on the clock led by four, 50-46. And with 9:46 left in the game, the Norse had built a nine-point lead.

Freit drained a three-pointer to make it a six point ball game, but Westby clung to the lead for the remainder of the game. With 6:24 left on the clock, Westby led by 10.

The Eagles did manage to close the gap several times, and with 1:15 left Hilden drove, scored and was fouled for a three point play to make it a one point game, 68-69.

Dempsey came up with a late bucket to answer a Norse score and keep it a one point ball game, and Hilden drained a pair of free throws with 9.7 left on the clock.

But the Eagles came up short, 72-74.

Kristt Hilden led the Eagles with 23 points, followed by Bowdy Dempsey with 17.

Isaac Hemmersbach scored 14 and Trevin Freit added 12. Jarret Carpenter scored 6.

The Eagles converted 11/16 free throws.

Hudson Lipski led the Norse with 26.

Cashton 70 - Royall 50

The Cashton Boys Basketball team improved to 2-2 in the Scenic Bluffs Conference, 6-3 overall, with a 70-50 win at Royall last Tuesday.

Kristt Hilden scored 31 points, including six three-pointers, to lead the Eagles in the win.

Isaac Hemmersbach and Bowdy Dempsey both scored in double digits with 15 and 13 points respectively.

Jarret Carpenter scored seven, and Presley Brueggen added two to round out the scoring for Cashton.

The Eagles scored 44 points in the first half, but were just five out of 15 from the free throw line for the game.
