Hyatt, Carpenter, Schaldach qualify for State Track meet at UW-La Crosse this weekend

 

The tournament series got underway for the Cashton Track and Field teams last week. On Monday, May 20, the Eagles competed in the WIAA Regional Meet at Luther. The top four finishers in each event qualified to the WIAA Sectional Meet; that meet was in Bangor on Thursday, May 23. In order to qualify for the WIAA State Meet, athletes and relay teams had to finish in the top four places.

At the regional, the girls finished second with 105 points; Luther won the meet with 116 points. The boys were fourth with 98 points and Aquinas won the team title (125). Aquinas swept the sectional team championships (girls 64 and boys 85); the Cashton girls were sixth (35) and the boys finished seventh (31.33)

Cashton will have three athletes competing at the State Meet. Adelynn Hyatt qualified in three events. She won sectional championships in both hurdle races. In the 100 meter hurdles, her time was 15.50, which is the third fastest time in school history (15.89 prelim). Her time in the 300 meter hurdles is second fastest in school history (47.33). Hyatt finished fourth in the high jump at 5’ 1”.

Jarret Carpenter qualified to state in the 1600 meter run and the 800 meter run for the second year in a row. He was second in the 1600 with a time of 4:33.18; that time breaks the school record that was held by Jason Schmitz (4:33.40 in 2006). Carpenter finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:03.26.

Austin Schaldach is returning to state in the 200 meter dash. He had a time of 22.80 in the prelims. In the finals, Schaldach finished second in 22.74; his time is second best in school history.

At the sectional, the 3200 meter relay team got the running portion of the meet started. Gracey Mlsna, Carly Butzler, Lydia Korn, and Emma Gronemus (10:45.62) teamed up to place ninth. Mlsna finished 13th in the 1600 (5:52.46) and Izzi Mason was 16th (6:02.97); Mason was 14th in the 3200 meter run (13:08.25).

Annie Schreier competed in four events. She was fifth in the shot put (34’ 4”), sixth in the triple jump (34’ 6.25”), seventh in the 200 meter dash (26.92 prelim/27.22 final), and eighth in the 100 (13.14 prelim/13.36 final).

Kristt Hilden was a competitor in three events. He was fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.36/16.47) and the 300 meter hurdles (41.98). Hilden was eighth in the triple jump (39’ 10.75”).

Trevin Freit finished tied for eighth in the high jump (5’ 8”), Nicole Olson made the finals in the shot put and finished ninth with a career best toss (32’ 9”), and Bryan Rivera finished in 15th place in the shot put (40’).

The WIAA State Track and Field Meet will be held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 31 and June 1. On Friday, Cashton competes in the morning session that begins at 9:30. Adelynn and Austin have preliminary races on Friday; the top ten in their events qualify to the finals. The finals on Saturday begin at 10:30. Jarret will run both of his races on Friday and Adelynn will high jump on Friday. There will be an assembly for the state qualifiers on Thursday, May 30 at 3:00 in the high school gym.
