Eagles hold off Cardinals for Regional Championship

 

The lady Eagles hung on to capture a Regional title against Bangor last Thursday, winning 15-14, at Bangor.

Allison Brownell drove in three runs and scored three times for Cashton. Haylee Connelly tripled, had three RBI and sored twice. Katelyn Schmitz had three hits and drove in three runs.

The Eagles scored three runs in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Hailey Huntzicker doubled to lead off the third. Natalie Kramer, Brianna Wanek, and Brownell followed that up with a string of singles. With two away in the inning, Katelyn Schmitz singled to bring a run in before the final out.

Cashton held the Cardinals to one run in the bottom of the third and added four more runs in the fourth.

The Eagles recorded just one hit in fourth inning. Alyssa Hooker led it off with a walk and Kramer came up with a base hit with one out. Hooker, Kramer, Wanek and Brownell would all end up scoring to stretch the lead to seven.

Bangor put together a big rally in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on four hits to cut the Eagle lead to a single run.

Cashton answered with a five run, fifth inning that started with another Hooker walk. Huntzicker reached on a base hit and Kramer on an error to load the bases. Connelly doubled to bring a pair of runs in and then scored, along with Faith Butzler, on a Schmitz hit.

Bangor scored two runs in the bottom of the inning and, after a scoreless Eagle sixth inning, tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Eagles led 15-11 after Connelly drew a walk and came around to score with six and one half innings in the books. But the Cardinals had one last rally in the bottom of the final inning.

Bangor scored three runs in the seventh before the Eagles shut to door and won 15-14.

Huntzicker 2-5 (double), 2 runs; Kramer 2-4, 3 runs; wanek 1-4, 2 runs; Brownell 2-3 (triple), 3 RBI, 3 runs; Connelly 1-1 (double), 3 RBI, 2 run; Butzler run; Schmitz 3-3, 3 RBI; Hooker 2 runs.

Wanek gave up 15 hits and struck out 7, with 5 walks.

Spencer 4 - Cashton 9

Cashton advanced to WIAA D4 Regional Championship game against Bangor by defeating Spencer in the second round, 9-4.

Brownell and Wanek were both perfect at the plate with three hits each. Brownell led the team with three RBI, and Wanek scored three runs to lead the offense.

Spencer got out of the gate quick with three runs in the first inning, but the Eagles responded with three in the bottom of the inning and added a run in both the second and fifth innings.

Spencer was held to just one run in the final six innings, and the Eagles put the game away with a four run sixth.

Schmitz, who finished the game 2-2, brought the final run across with a base hit in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-4.

Huntzicker 1-4, run; Kramer 1-3, run; Wanek 3-3, 3 runs; Brownell 3-3, 3 RBI, 2 runs; Butzler run; Schmitz 2-2, RBI; Hooker run.

Wanek pitched 7 innings, gave up 8 hits, and struck out 8.
